Solo Dates to Take Yourself on This Autumn
There is something about autumn that makes you want to slow down.
The mornings are cooler, the evenings arrive a little earlier and life seems to invite you to become more intentional with how you spend your time. It is the perfect season for long walks, candlelit dinners, good books and perhaps most importantly, your own company.
A solo date is not about being alone. It is about making an occasion of your own life. About getting dressed for yourself, going somewhere simply because you want to and remembering that you don't need to wait for somebody else to make a day feel special.
This autumn, take yourself somewhere.
A morning at your favourite café
Find a beautiful little café and give yourself an unhurried morning.
Order something you wouldn't normally make at home. Maybe a chai latte and something warm from the pastry counter. Take a table by the window. Bring a book, a notebook or nothing at all.
Let yourself sit there for as long as you like.
There is a particular luxury in not having to rush.
A walk through the changing leaves
Autumn is at its best when you are outside.
Put on your favourite coat, wrap yourself in a scarf and take the long way home. Find a park, a quiet street or somewhere surrounded by trees and allow yourself to wander without a destination.
Notice the small things: the sound of leaves beneath your feet, the smell of the cold air, the golden light in the late afternoon.
You don't always need a plan. Sometimes the point is simply to be present.
Take yourself to lunch
There is something wonderfully grown-up about taking yourself out for lunch.
Choose somewhere you've been meaning to try. Wear the outfit you've been saving. Order exactly what you want, no sharing required and enjoy the ritual of sitting down to a proper meal.
Bring a book if you like, but don't feel obliged to fill the silence.
Let the afternoon stretch.
An afternoon in a gallery
Spend a few hours somewhere beautiful.
A gallery or museum is one of those rare places where being alone feels completely natural. You can move slowly, linger over the pieces that catch your attention and leave whenever you're ready.
Afterwards, find a nearby café and write down what you loved.
It doesn't have to be profound. Sometimes it's enough to notice what moves you.
The solo cinema date
Choose the film you actually want to see.
No compromising. No waiting for somebody else's schedule to line up. Just a ticket, a tub of popcorn and two hours in the dark.
Make an evening of it by going for dinner afterwards, or walk home with your headphones on and let yourself stay in the mood of the film a little longer.
A bookstore and a rainy afternoon
Few things feel more autumnal than getting caught in the rain and finding yourself somewhere surrounded by books.
Spend an afternoon browsing without a shopping list. Read the first page of novels you've never heard of. Pick something because the cover catches your eye.
Then take your new book somewhere cosy and begin it over a cup of tea.
Let the rest of the world carry on without you for a while.
Dinner for one
Perhaps the most underrated solo date of all.
Book the restaurant. Dress up. Sit at the counter or by the window. Order the dish you've been thinking about all week.
Dining alone can feel unfamiliar at first, but there is freedom in not needing conversation to justify your evening.
You are allowed to take yourself somewhere lovely simply because you deserve a lovely evening.
A little escape
You don't need to go far to feel somewhere else.
Take a train to a nearby town you've never properly explored. Walk through the streets, browse independent shops, find a beautiful café and see where the day takes you.
Leave the itinerary at home.
Sometimes the nicest kind of adventure is one where nobody knows exactly where you'll end up.
An evening made entirely for you
And then there are the dates that happen at home.
Fresh sheets. A long shower. Your favourite dinner. Candles lit before sunset. A film you've seen before. Something sweet for afterwards.
Put your phone away. Make the evening feel considered.
Because romance isn't always something another person gives you.
Sometimes it is the way you choose to spend an ordinary Tuesday evening with yourself.
Make a date of your own life
Perhaps that is the real beauty of solo dating.
It teaches you not to postpone pleasure. Not to wait for somebody else to have the time, make the reservation or suggest the plan.
You can go now.
This autumn, make your own little rituals. Take yourself somewhere beautiful. Sit in the window seat. Buy the flowers. Order dessert. Stay out until the sky turns dark.
Your life is happening in all those quiet moments, too.
And they are worth making beautiful.
