A Night In, Done Properly

Pinterest

There are nights when going out feels like exactly what you need.

And then there are nights when the idea of putting on shoes, finding a taxi and making conversation somewhere noisy feels like entirely too much.

Autumn is made for the latter.

A night in doesn't have to mean scrolling for three hours in bed. With a little intention, staying home can feel like a plan.

Here's how to do it properly.

Start by changing the atmosphere

The end of the working day is the moment to make the transition.

Change into something comfortable. Put your phone on charge. Tidy the kitchen just enough that you won't spend the evening looking at it.

Then change the lighting.

Lamps on. Overhead lights off. Candles, if that's your thing.

You've officially arrived.

Make dinner worth staying in for

This isn't the night for eating something straight from the packet while standing at the kitchen counter.

It also doesn't need to be complicated.

Make your favourite pasta. Roast some vegetables. Cook something slowly. Order from the restaurant you love and put it on a real plate.

Pour yourself something nice.

The point is to make an ordinary meal feel like an occasion.

Put on a playlist

Choose something before you sit down.

Jazz, soul, acoustic, classical, whatever makes your home feel good.

Music fills the space in a way television doesn't and it can make even the simplest dinner feel more intentional.

Do something that isn't scrolling

Read a few chapters of a book.

Take a bath.

Bake something.

Write in your journal.

Do a face mask.

Watch an old favourite film.

Or simply sit on the sofa and do absolutely nothing for a while.

Not every evening needs to be productive.

Make dessert part of the plan

A good night in deserves something sweet.

It could be baked apples, dark chocolate and strawberries, a warm crumble or simply your favourite ice cream in a actual bowl.

There's something wonderfully old-fashioned about ending the evening with dessert.

Make the bedroom the final destination

When you're ready for bed, don't take the entire evening with you.

Put your phone away from the bed. Turn the lights down.

Fresh sheets and a good book are the perfect ending.

The luxury of staying home

We spend so much time making plans, travelling, booking, organising and filling our calendars.

Sometimes the most luxurious plan is no plan at all.

A good night in isn't about doing nothing.

It's about choosing to be exactly where you are and making that feel like enough.

So tonight, stay in.

Just do it properly.
