Autumn months often seduce us to settle in with a hot cup of tea in our hands and a good romantic comedy. But what if I told you that we can live out our favourite romcoms walking around the city? Let’s dissect the wardrobes of the cinematic autumn icons and bring a little fashion romance into real life.
(Bridget Jones's Diary, 2001)
During the dull but colourful months of autumn, we often find ourselves craving a little more familiarity and cosiness than usual. Some seek it in romantic walks through the park, while others prefer to hibernate at home. But maybe it doesn’t have to be a “choose your fighter” situation. Why not find outfit inspiration in our favourite autumn films? One moment you’re having a peaceful evening at home, the next you’re walking out the house dressed like a dream.
It doesn’t even matter if you’re taken, single or looking for a perfect movie night companion. We’re going to look at some work-appropriate outfits, as well as fancy and casual date-night options. At the end of the day, who says a girl can’t have it all? Most romcom ladies definitely managed the work-life balance.
Most of the movies we’ll look at today are from the 90s, late 80s, and early 2000s. Is there a particular reason for that, aside from the crippeling unpragmatic nostalgia? Maybe.
Even though I didn’t get to live during those culture-saturated times doesn’t mean I’m not trying to. Romance seemed to be alive, cinema still had a soul, and fashion was deeply rooted in personality. Lots of leather jackets, casual smokey eyes, big hair and an ability to wear heels in any life situation. Sounds fun? Then I say we bring a bit of vintage chic into jumper-wearing drizzly days.
Magic is in the air
Ever feel that sudden urge to look a tad more mysterious and witchy in autumn? The leaves turn orange, days grow shorter and our sensitive souls see a little more spirituality around. Well, if you get it, then Practical Magic is a must-watch for you. It has it all: romance, witches and an incredibly warm atmosphere.
Now, fashionably speaking, the movie carries a very specific grungy 90s charm. The theme of witches gives the perfect opportunity to play historical dress-up in the flashbacks, giving it almost a gothic feel. The outfits aren’t necessarily dark since they stick to a very romantic colour palette, but the details support the overall mood.
Practical Magic (1998)
Autumn doesn’t always have to be around coats and scarves, especially if you live in a warmer climate. If the vibe of Practical Magic is something you’d like to try, then take a look at some maxi skirts and dresses, chunky knit sweaters, jumpers with ornaments and overall floral print. We see on screen that they wear a lot of tank tops, some velvet and light-wash straight-leg jeans. Perhaps this aesthetic would suit someone who loves thrift stores and vintage pieces. Also, it vividly reminds me of Phoebe from Friends, so perhaps she can make your inspo list as well.
Practical Magic (1998)
And since we’re on the topic of witches and beautiful visuals, I couldn’t skip this one. Of course, when I said romcoms, I didn’t mean just movies. So the first TV series in today’s list is Charmed. The series begins in San Francisco, so it’s very much a chic, big-city vibe. The outfits are still incredibly timeless and perhaps a bit more minimalistic.
(Charmed, 1998)
There are 3 main characters - the Halliwell sisters. Prue prefers smarter workwear looks. It’s all about pencil skirts, immaculate suits, transparent blouses and thin cashmere. Piper, on the other hand, is more relaxed and casual with her outfits. She wears softer silhouettes, a lot of denim, comfy cardigans and occasional little black dresses. Phoebe, the youngest, loves to take more risks, while still looking fabulous. She’s more feminine in a “girly”, youthful sense. Mini skirts, knee-high boots, fun colours and the coolest accessories.
While the first season is deeply 90s core, in later seasons they grow into a Y2K style. Simple tank tops start to have cut-outs and glitter, straight-leg jeans become baggier and rich dark colours turn brighter. I would definitely recommend the series for some office wear inspo, as well as just generally a great take on 90s brooding minimalism and wearable 2000s chic. If you’d like to add some Halliwell sisters magic into your wardrobe, have a look at vintage leather coats, casual deep V tops, knit cardigans and midi skirts.

Big city love
Magic is wonderful, but our previous romcoms were not very relatable or realistic. And neither are these. So let’s get down to the love stories happening around iconic spots.
For our first trip, we’re going to London, Notting Hill, to be more precise. The eponymous movie came out in 1999, starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. The mood of the film is surprisingly grounded for the genre, featuring beautiful London views and the famous Notting Hill market. The colour palette is earthy, light and incredibly calming. The outfits fall under the same vibe with classic oversized shirts, simple cuts and a lack of prints. However, it’s not the same 90s minimalism we saw before.
(Notting Hill, 1999)
Costume designers accomplished an incredible thing in this movie - they made an otherwise extraordinary story seem visually cosy and inviting. As for the characters’ wardrobes, Julia Roberts wears a classic black leather coat, knee-length skirts and dresses and simple white tees. But she spends some part of the movie wearing Hugh Grant’s character’s clothes. It’s a chunky grey jumper over a simple t-shirt and his blue shirt. Combined with a pair of her Vans sneakers, it looks like the most comfortable and simultaneously chic outfit for any casual activity. So I actively promote fashion theft within relationships.
(Notting Hill, 1999)
I would also like to note the marvellous styling for male characters. Hugh Grant often wears classic straight-leg jeans, with shirts and occasional blazers. Sounds basic, but the clothes fit a bit loose, which makes him look stylish while staying “ordinary”. He rolls up the sleeves and opens a few top buttons of shirts, which is a great way to make them look casual and “easy-going”. Notting Hill is a really great watch for you if you like London, steal your partner’s clothes and believe in fate.
I can’t believe it, but we haven’t been to New York yet. It’s THE city for romcoms and sitcoms. And “When Sally met Harry” is the perfect example of a perfect New York romcom. It’s the perfect autumn movie that won’t get you anxious or depressed. You could even watch it with your best friend you have feelings for. It’s gonna go great, trust me!
(When Harry Met Sally, 1989)
Let’s get down to fashion. When Harry met Sally was just on the threshold between the 80s and 90s. It features a lot of 80s traits like Sally’s hairstyle, hats and preppy style. But the tones got gloomier as we approached the next decade. It doesn’t have the over-the-top bright colours and crazy layering like the mid-80s. It features a great variety of jumpers, plaid shirts and high-waisted trousers. If you're looking for the perfect October outfit, try Sally’s combo of a wool jumper, blazer and leather gloves. Pair it with jeans or tailored trousers and you’ve got the perfect fit for work or a Sunday walk through the park. A mid-size crossbody bag would be the perfect and functional finishing touch.

Honourable mention
I can’t get through this list without mentioning a great, but perhaps overexposed show. The iconic series Friends, like it or not, had some of the most memorable autumn wardrobes in history. Girls’ outfits were built to support their personalities. We, however, can choose to be Monica on Monday, Rachel on Wednesday, and have a Phoebe weekend.
(Friends, 1994)
Monica wore great turtlenecks, mini skirts and preferred brown and dark red. In earlier seasons, she preferred black loafers or white tennis shoes and we could see her wearing grungier pieces. In later seasons, her style became a bit more feminine with fitted silhouettes and mid-length skirts. If you want Monica’s outfit, you could try pairing a red cardigan or jumper with jeans or a mini skirt, loafers and a warm coat. Don’t forget the scarf!
(Friends, 1994)
Rachel’s colour palette had more greens, greys and blacks. She rocked a leather coat (today’s most popular piece) and knee-high heeled boots. She also had an admirable collection of skirts - pleated minis, midi pencil skirts and maxi wrap ones. If you’d like to steal her look, try a sleeveless rollneck or a white fitted shirt, pleated grey mini skirt, and knee high boots with tights. Finish off the look with your favourite structured (ish) coat and a bag.
(Friends, 1994)
Phoebe always wore a lot of colour, prints and always had her rings on. We can see her in stripy tops, floral maxi dresses and jean vests. Similar to the previously mentioned witches, she’s got the “hippy” spirit in her style. If you want a little Phoebe vibe in your closet, try thrift shopping and don’t be afraid to wear all your favourite jewellery together. The recipe for her look is a warm knit jumper, a maxi skirt and lace-up boots. Don’t forget to have fun with your hair!
Of course, don’t forget to rewatch your favourite romcom this autumn and have fun with your outfits. You can always find inspiration in movies and shows, while staying true to yourself and your style.
