How WAGs Took Over Fashion
I used to think people watched Formula 1 for the racing. Then I opened Instagram during a race weekend and realised half of us were actually there to see what everyone was wearing walking into the paddock.
And honestly, it’s not just Formula 1 anymore. Somewhere along the way, sport became one of fashion’s biggest inspirations. Football, tennis, Formula 1… the outfits are almost as exciting as the matches themselves.
You’ve got Alexandra Leclerc making me want to live in dresses, Kika Gomes proving that sporty chic is never going out of style, and Victoria Beckham reminding us that she was doing it all long before the rest of us caught on. They all dress completely differently, but somehow they’ve all influenced the way we get dressed.
At this point, we’re not just watching the sport anymore. We’re also watching the outfits.
Kika Gomes
Kika Gomes dresses like she never spends more than five minutes getting ready, yet somehow everyone ends up saving her outfits to Pinterest.
She has this way of making sporty pieces feel ridiculously cool. One race weekend she’s wearing an oversized football jersey with dark wide-leg jeans and tiny sunglasses, the next she’s in a simple black co-ord that looks expensive without trying to. There’s nothing loud about her wardrobe. No head-to-toe designer logos or outfits that feel like they’re trying to go viral. It’s clean, relaxed and just really good.
You’ll spot plenty of monochrome, black tank tops, straight-leg denim, mini bags, delicate gold jewellery and tiny sunglasses. Even when she’s dressed up, it still feels easy. Like she could’ve thrown it on in five minutes and still walked into the paddock looking like she belongs there.
I think that’s what makes her style so likeable. It doesn’t feel untouchable. It feels like the cool girl you saw on your Instagram explore page and immediately started looking for a similar pair of jeans. If sporty chic had a face, it’d probably be Kika Gomes.
Alexandra Leclerc
Every time Alexandra Leclerc turns up to a race weekend, I end up convincing myself I need another dress.
Whilst everyone else is in jeans and jackets, she’s walking through the paddock in a fitted maxi dress, a floral co-ord or the prettiest little cocktail dress you’ve ever seen. It should feel overdressed, but somehow it never does. It just looks right.
She’s such a dress girl, and I love that she leans into it. Browns, creams, butter yellow, soft florals, tiny sunglasses, little handbags and simple heels are basically her uniform. Every outfit feels feminine without being overly girly, and even when she’s wearing sequins, it still feels tasteful.
I think that’s what I love most about her style. She never looks like she’s dressed for the cameras. She just looks like herself, and the paddock happens to be where she’s spending the day. Nothing feels forced, and that’s exactly why you remember every outfit.
If you asked me to describe her wardrobe in three words, I’d say feminine, elegant and refined.
Victoria Beckham
Let’s be honest, there wouldn’t be a modern WAG style conversation without Victoria Beckham.
Way before Formula 1 paddocks became the place to see and be seen, Victoria was already turning football matches into her own runway. She’d show up in low-rise jeans, a tiny cami, the biggest sunglasses imaginable and a Birkin you’ve ever seen. Extra? Maybe. Iconic? Absolutely.
Looking back now, it’s actually funny because everything we’re obsessed with again was already hanging in her wardrobe. Leopard print, lace camis, oversized sunglasses, denim, giant handbags and sky-high heels. She wore it all before Pinterest mood boards told us to.
What I love most about her style is that she never looked like she was dressing for anyone else. She wore exactly what she wanted, whether people got it or not. And honestly, that’s probably why she’s still the blueprint. Trends come and go, but confidence never really goes out of fashion.
Morgan Riddle
Morgan Riddle has honestly made me want to book Centre Court tickets just for the outfits.
She somehow makes tennis fashion feel cool instead of intimidating. Think tailored mini dresses, crisp white blazers, polka dots, matching sets and the prettiest little handbags you’ve ever seen. Then out of nowhere she’ll wear a denim co-ord and remind you that classic doesn’t have to mean boring.
Everything about her wardrobe feels very clean. Nothing is screaming for attention, but somehow you’re still looking. The hair is always perfect, the jewellery is minimal, the sunglasses are tiny, and every outfit makes me want to immediately open Pinterest.
I think that’s what I like most about her style. She never looks like she’s trying to win best dressed. She just looks like she got dressed, walked out the door and accidentally became everyone’s mood board. If there was a dress code for Centre Court, she’d probably be the one writing it.
